Located in rural Multnomah County Oregon, River City Shiitake started business in 1995 as a family run business. The business was founded by Mary Mayfield-Gambill and her late husband Bill.
After graduating from Oregon State University, Mary had acquired an interest in growing mushrooms while working as a research microbiologist at the Oregon Graduate Center. The project she was working on was funded by major paper manufacturers, and they were trying to develop a biological method of pulp production by speeding up the process by which mushrooms break down lignin in wood.
1996 was the first year that commercial deliveries of Shiitake mushrooms were made to local Portland area businesses. Since starting out, River City has expanded their production facilities to three buildings with a total floor space of over 8700 square feet
River City produces high quality organically produced, Shiitake and Maitake mushrooms. Their products are sold in stores throughout Oregon and California.
Current production capacity is over 800 pounds of mushrooms per week to wholesale customers. Future plans include expansion of the facilities and an increase in production capacity to over 1400 pounds per week.
River City Shiitake prides themselves in the Quality of their product, and they are organically certified by Oregon Tilth.
